ACT-CO Festival Results

The Curtain Club Theatre is proud to announce that our theatre received 18 nominations and 4 awards at the 2013/2014 ACTCO Festival. Details are as follows:

Nomination and WIN for Best Production of a Comedy; Lenin's Embalmers, Produced by Jo Ann Warren. (Citation: "The entire company showed great commitment to the world of Stalinist Russia 1924.  Balanced casting, uniformly strong acting performances along with a very risky ruling idea, all figured deeply into keeping the piece of comedy with dark undertones.  A story that had to be told, this production provided us with insight and understanding of a harsh and difficult world but in a humorous and entertaining manner".)
Lenin’s Embalmers will be going on to compete in the 2014 Theatre Ontario Festival in Sarnia, Ontario, May 14th to 18th  and is on stage at The Curtain Club Theatre until April 12th 2014. Please contact the Box Office for tickets: 905-773-3434.

Nomination for Best Director of a Comedy: Joan Burrows for Lenin's Embalmers

Nomination for Best Stage Manager of a Comedy: Sharon Dykstra for Lenin's Embalmers

Nomination and WIN for Best Performance of a Male in a Leading Role: Phil Dionne as “Boris Zbarsky” in Lenin's Embalmers.  (Citation: "In the role of Boris Zbarsky, Phil Dionne was impressive in the clarity of the character of Boris.  The strength, physical realization, vocalization of, and commitment to the role and to the production while revealing his obvious team attitude made his performance noteworthy, indeed".)

Nomination for Best Performance by a Male in a Supporting Role Comedy (Award Sponsored by The Curtain Club in memory of Derek Miller) - Fabian Levy-Hara as “Stalin” in Lenin’s Embalmers.

Nomination for Best Performance by a Female in a Supporting Role Comedy:  Tamara Van Baker as “Nadia 1, 2 and 3” in Lenin’s Embalmers.

Nomination for Best Lighting Design of a Comedy: Mary Jane Boon and David Rhodes for Lenin's Embalmers.

Nomination for Best Set Design of a Comedy: Alice Torrance and Wayne Milliner for Lenin's Embalmers.

Nomination and WIN for Best Sound Design of a Comedy:  John Hunter for Lenin's Embalmers.  (Citation: An absolutely appropriate meld of klesmer, balalaika, grand opera and early vaudeville provided the audience with an ample underscoring of Lenin's Embalmers while giving in a subtle way a clear indication through musical convention, shifts in location from the provinces to Moscow.  It also underscored and enhanced the risky vaudeville approach to the piece.")

Nomination for Best Stage Manager of a Drama: Debbie Makarenko for Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.

Nomination for Best Performance by a Female in a Leading Role:
Heather Nutt-Christensen as “Sissy” in Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.
